Volksworld Camper & Bus - Land Down Under

Wmag2-landdownundere have such a lot to thank Australia for. I mean, it’s a country that gave us such wonders as the Minogue sisters, Hugh Jackman (who else could play the Wolverine?), the electric pacemaker, Crocodile Dundee and, er, Rupert Murdoch. Okay, some of those are a bit tongue in cheek, but you get where I’m coming from. The land down under has given us some pretty cool exports over the years and another is, can you guess? Yes, that’s right, award yourself a gold star, rot free RHD Buses. Getting them from one side of the planet to another is a bit of an obstacle, but where there’s a will there’s a way, right? And if you will insist on having an old VW with the steering wheel on the right side (literally) but don’t want to spend half your life welding up rotten sheet metal, then an Aussie import makes a heck of a lot of sense.

Volksworld Camper & Bus - New Old Stock

mag4-newoldstockdSet up around nine years ago by Ian Harris, to import, sell and rent Vans, VW Kampers has expanded over the years and now offers everything from rental to total restoration. So, when a customer turned up wanting a new Bay, but wasn’t keen on a Brazilian one, it started Ian wondering if he could build an original Bus to as new condition? Now we’re not talking a concours restoration here, although the finish on the final product is exceptional. This was to be an everyday usable Bus, just like a new Brazilian Bay, but instead of a Camper that would steadily depreciate from the second it left the forecourt, the basis would still be a classic 70’s VW that should hold its value. By coincidence, Ian had the perfect donor vehicle tucked away in the yard. It was a ’77 Westfalia that was completely sound, even down to the original paint, having been laid up in a garage for 25 years after the engine had packed up.

Volksworld Camper & Bus - Marigold

Bmag3-marigoldased down on the south coast in Brighton – well, Hove actually – Ian Harris has owned a good few Volkswagens over the years. In his 28-years he’s notched up an impressive list that includes a 1956 Split Single Cab that was “on the
floor with a four inch narrowed beam,” he tells us. He’s also had a 1965 Split Screen Panel Van with a sliding door, in
show condition, a 1970 tin-top Westy with a narrowed beam and polished Raders, a ’78 Westfalia Wide-Bed Pick-Up
with just 47k miles on the clock and a 1967 Type 3 Fastback. Like we say, impressive. However, that’s just the
VWs he counts as his own. If you add to that the Volkswagens that he’s bought and sold to customers, the numbers
climbs rapidly. You see, Ian is the classic hobbyist who ends up allowing his life to be engulfed by his pastime and now VWs are his full-time occupation. The start of the slippery slope was a 1979 Devon Camper Ian bought from
a friend as a project.

Volksworld Camper & Bus - Shop tour

mag1-shoptourVW Kampers Ltd. was started as a passion nine years ago by Ian Harris. Whilst he had a full-time job to pay the bills, he always had a dream of owning a Split Screen Bus, but couldn’t afford one so bought, sold and restored Bay Windows until he’d saved up enough to buy his dream Camper – a 1965 Split. By then, the VW bug had well and truly bitten him and he had fallen in love with old Campers, so continued importing and selling them from his home garage. That was until he realised he had 11 in stock and couldn’t hold down a full-time job any more, so in 2009 VW Kampers Ltd. was born.
